Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Arrecife

Arrecife is the way into Lanzarote, an island born of fire and still black. Timanfaya National Park is its core: red and ochre craters, and ground so hot just under the surface that meat is still grilled on it. The lava left long tunnels behind, among them Cueva de los Verdes, and one of them was turned into an underground garden around a salt lake, the Jameos del Agua. Vines grow here in scooped hollows of black ash, each one ringed by a low crescent of stones, and Bodega La Geria makes a dry white from them. In the north, Mirador del Río opens more than four hundred metres above the sea. Below it the long beach of Famara runs under the Risco de Famara, a shore given over to surfers. In the south, Playa de Papagayo has pale sand and clear water. The look of the whole island is the work of one man, the artist César Manrique, who imposed white houses and a ban on building high.

Timanfaya National Park

2–3 Std.NationalparkVulkanAussichtspunkt

The lava field left by the 1730-1736 eruptions, where the ground still exceeds 400°C a few metres down — staff prove it with a water geyser and a volcano-fired grill. Visits run only by park coach and vehicle numbers are capped, so arrive at opening; the queue builds by mid-morning.

Jameos del Agua

1–2 Std.SeeHöhleVulkanDenkmal

A collapsed lava tube turned by César Manrique into an auditorium and garden, built around an underground lake home to the jameíto, a blind albino crab found nowhere else. A combined ticket with the nearby Cueva de los Verdes costs less than two separate entries.

Cueva de los Verdes

1–2 Std.HöhleVulkan

One walkable kilometre inside a six-kilometre lava tunnel formed by the Corona volcano, once a hiding place from Barbary raids. Visits are guided only, the temperature holds around 19°C and the uneven floor calls for proper shoes.

Playa de Papagayo

Ganzer TagStrandBuchtNaturstrandBadenSchnorcheln

A string of golden coves inside the protected Los Ajaches area at the island's southern tip, looking across to Fuerteventura. Access is by dirt track with a toll per vehicle, and there is no shade and no shop — bring water and a parasol.

Mirador del Río

≈1 Std.SteilküsteAussichtspunktDenkmal

The viewpoint César Manrique carved into the cliff, 475 metres above the strait separating Lanzarote from La Graciosa. Entry is paid; the light is clearest early in the day, before the sea haze rises.

Famara

Ganzer TagStrandNaturstrandSteilküsteSurfenKitesurfen

Six kilometres of sand beneath a 600-metre cliff, the heart of Lanzarote's surf scene and one of the island's most photographed landscapes. Currents are strong and much of the beach is unpatrolled — swim near the surf schools.
