Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Berlin
Berlin has erased nothing of its past, and that is what makes it so gripping. The Wall split the city for twenty-eight years: one long painted stretch survives as the East Side Gallery, and a section stands untouched at the Berlin Wall Memorial. The Brandenburg Gate once sat in the middle of no man's land; it has been walked under freely since 1989. Inside the glass dome of the Reichstag Building, a ramp spirals up above the debating chamber. Five museums crowd onto Museum Island, where the painted bust of Nefertiti, more than three thousand years old, is the best-known resident. A third of the city is park, forest and lake, and people swim without ever leaving the city limits. Once it gets dark the neighbourhood cafés stay open very late, and the clubs are still going the next day.

Brandenburg Gate
The neoclassical arch of 1791, crowned by its quadriga, stranded between the two Berlins until 1989. The square is pedestrian and open at all hours, and the floodlighting after dark makes the best photographs.
East Side Gallery
A 1.3-kilometre stretch of surviving Wall along the Spree, painted by 118 artists in 1990 — the Brezhnev-Honecker kiss among them. The walk is free and open, running between Warschauer Straße and Ostbahnhof stations.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
A field of 2,711 concrete slabs of uneven height, designed by Peter Eisenman and opened in 2005 a short walk from the Brandenburg Gate. The memorial is always open and free; the underground information centre, which reads out the victims' names, closes on Mondays.
Berlin Zoological Garden
Opened in 1844, this is Germany's oldest zoo and one of the world's richest in number of species, entered through the Elephant Gate on Budapester Straße. A combined ticket adds the adjoining aquarium, and Zoologischer Garten station comes out almost at the gates.
Berlin Cathedral
The Protestant cathedral completed in 1905, its dome rising ninety-eight metres above a Hohenzollern crypt holding ninety-four sarcophagi. The ticket includes the outer dome walkway, two hundred and seventy steps up over Museum Island.
Berlin Wall Memorial
On Bernauer Straße, the only section where the death strip has been reconstructed complete with wall, patrol road and watchtower. The open-air site and the documentation centre are free, and the viewing tower gives the overview.
