Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Chania

Chania is built around a half-moon harbour, lined with ochre Venetian houses and closed off by a long stone breakwater with a lighthouse at its end. Behind it the lanes keep Turkish doorways, old fountains and the smell of fresh bread. The west coast of Crete is among the finest in Greece: the pink sand of Elafonissi Beach, the shallow lagoon of Balos Beach, the narrow inlets of Seitan Limania, the wide open shore of Falasarna Beach. Inland, white limestone mountains close the horizon. That is where the gorge of Samaria National Park begins, sixteen kilometres of descent between walls hundreds of metres high. Tavernas serve lamb, fresh cheese and honey pie, with a raki poured for free at the end. The covered market sells island olive oil, mountain herbs and sheep's cheese, and leather sandals are still cut to size in the lanes behind it.

Old Venetian Port of Chania

1–2 Std.AltstadtDenkmalGastronomieNachtleben

A horseshoe basin dug by the Venetians from the 1320s, lined on its eastern side by the vaulted arsenals where galleys were refitted — seven of the original seventeen bays still stand. The quay is pedestrian; in late afternoon the tavernas put their tables out on the flagstones.

Balos Beach

Ganzer TagStrandTraumstrandLaguneBadenBootstour

A shallow lagoon closed off by a sand spit at the foot of the Gramvousa peninsula, on the island's north-western tip. Access is by boat from Kissamos or along eight kilometres of dirt track followed by a walk down; there is no permanent bar and no natural shade.

Elafonissi Beach

In places the sand takes a pink cast from crushed shell, and a shallow channel separates the beach from the protected Natura 2000 islet. The lagoon lies about 75 kilometres southwest of Chania, around an hour and a half by road; the car parks fill early.

Seitan Limania

3+ Std.StrandBuchtSteilküsteBadenWandern

A slot of a cove between two cliffs on the Akrotiri peninsula, its name meaning the devil's harbours after the currents that troubled sailors. The way down from the car park is a rocky, slippery path with no handrail, and there is no water and no shade at the bottom.

Falasarna Beach

Ganzer TagStrandWeißer SandBadenSurfen

A long, pale-sand beach facing due west, where the onshore wind regularly kicks up surf; the ruins of ancient Falasarna, whose harbour was lifted several metres by the earthquake of 365, lie just to the north. It is some sixty kilometres from town, the last stretch dropping towards the sea.

Knossos Archaeological Site

1–2 Std.Archäologische StätteDenkmal

A Minoan palace occupied from around 1900 BC, a maze of more than a thousand rooms that Arthur Evans excavated and partly rebuilt in painted concrete from 1900 onwards. It lies beside Heraklion, two and a half hours by road from Chania, with almost no shade on site.
