Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Granada

Granada sits beneath a red hill crowned by the Alhambra, the fortress and palace of the last Muslim rulers of Spain. Inside, the Nasrid Palaces run from pool to courtyard under plaster ceilings cut like lace. Across the valley an old quarter of white lanes climbs the opposite slope, and the Mirador de San Nicolás gives the view everyone comes for. The city still serves a free tapa with every drink, so dinner happens bar by bar for almost nothing. The Catholic Monarchs lie in the Royal Chapel of Granada, in the middle of the shopping streets. Flamenco is still sung in Sacromonte, in caves dug straight into the hillside. The city's name is the Spanish word for pomegranate, and the fruit is carved on gates, doors and bollards all over town. Above the rooftops the ridges of Sierra Nevada National Park close the horizon, ninety minutes from the Mediterranean.

Alhambra

3+ Std.PalastFestungDenkmalUNESCO

The palace-fortress of the Nasrid sultans on the Sabika hill, built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and World Heritage-listed since 1984: the Alcazaba, the Nasrid palaces and the Generalife gardens. Tickets are named, tied to a fixed slot for the palaces, and sell out weeks ahead.

Mirador de San Nicolás

≈1 Std.AussichtspunktAltstadt

This Albaicín terrace holds the best-known head-on view of the Alhambra, with snow-capped peaks behind it. Come late in the afternoon for low light on the walls; buses C31 and C32 spare you the climb.

Sehr beliebt

Nasrid Palaces

2–3 Std.PalastDenkmalUNESCO

The core of the Alhambra: the Court of the Lions, the Hall of the Two Sisters and 14th-century Nasrid stucco. Entry is at the exact half-hour printed on the ticket and cannot be moved — slots sell out weeks ahead.

Granada Cathedral

1–2 Std.SakralbauKathedraleDenkmal

Begun in 1523 on the site of the main mosque and turned from Gothic to Renaissance by Diego de Siloé; the facade follows a design by Alonso Cano, and only one of the two planned towers was built. Entry is ticketed; the Royal Chapel next door, where the Catholic Monarchs lie, needs its own ticket.

Generalife

1–2 Std.ParkPalastDenkmalUNESCO

The summer palace and terraced gardens of the Nasrid emirs, laid out in the early fourteenth century on the hill above the Alhambra, around the Patio de la Acequia and its long water channel. The Alhambra general ticket covers it; a cheaper gardens ticket visits it without the Nasrid palaces.

Sierra Nevada National Park

Ganzer TagNationalparkWandernAussichtspunktSki

The park peaks at Mulhacén, 3,479 metres and the highest point in mainland Spain, under an hour's drive from the city. The ski station runs from December to April; in summer the lifts open up the high trails.
