Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Kairo
Cairo is an enormous city on the Nile, and the only one where pyramids show up over the rooftops. The Great Pyramid of Giza is four and a half thousand years old and stayed the tallest building on earth for close to four millennia. Tutankhamun's gold now fills its own galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum, built within sight of the plateau. Cairo is known as the city of a thousand minarets, and the old Islamic quarter shows why: Al-Azhar Mosque has been teaching for over a thousand years, and Al-Muizz Street lines up gates, fountains and madrasas along a single kilometre. In the alleys of Khan el-Khalili, copper and spices are haggled over between glasses of mint tea. Above it all, the Citadel of Saladin holds the high ground, crowned by the domes and thin minarets of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. In the evening families fill Al-Azhar Park and the sun drops behind the skyline.

Great Pyramid of Giza
Khufu's pyramid stood 146 metres tall and is the only one of the seven ancient wonders still standing. Going inside the King's Chamber costs extra and is bought at the plateau gate: the passage is low, narrow and unventilated.
Al-Azhar Mosque
The first mosque of Fatimid Cairo, founded in 970 with the city itself, and the seat of al-Azhar University, among the oldest teaching institutions in the world. Entry is free outside prayer times; arms and legs must be covered, shoes left at the door.
Great Sphinx of Giza
A recumbent lion with a human head, cut from a single limestone bed some four and a half thousand years ago and seventy-three metres long. It stands inside the Giza plateau enclosure alongside the pyramids, and one ticket covers the whole site.
Egyptian Museum in Cairo
The Tahrir Square museum holds over 120,000 antiquities, though the Tutankhamun treasure has moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza and the display shifts as pieces transfer. Tickets are sold at the door.
Grand Egyptian Museum
A museum opened at the foot of the Giza plateau to bring the scattered Egyptian collections together, including the complete Tutankhamun treasure. Tickets are sold online and the morning slots go first.
Citadel of Saladin
The fortress Saladin began in 1176 on the Mokattam spur housed Egypt's rulers for seven centuries. One ticket covers the Muhammad Ali Mosque and three museums; the esplanade offers no shade at all.
