Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Lima

Lima sits on cliffs that fall straight into the Pacific. The Malecón de Miraflores follows the edge for kilometres, past paragliders drifting level with the buildings and gardens planted along the drop. The city has become the great kitchen of South America: ceviche of raw fish cured in lime, cooking shaped by Japan, China and Spain, pisco sour in the late afternoon. The colonial centre keeps its carved wooden balconies around the Plaza Mayor de Lima, and the Monastery of San Francisco hides catacombs where bones are stacked in circles. The Larco Museum gathers thousands of pre-Columbian ceramics in a white house buried under bougainvillea. In the middle of a residential district, the adobe pyramid of Huaca Pucllana was raised long before the Incas. In Barranco, the Puente de los Suspiros crosses a lane of painted houses among artists' studios and music bars, and the Pacific swell carries surfers to Punta Hermosa Beach, further south.

Plaza Mayor de Lima

≈1 Std.AltstadtDenkmalUNESCO

The Plaza Mayor laid out by Pizarro in 1535 still has its 1651 bronze fountain, the only original element left standing. The changing of the guard at the presidential palace takes place at noon, Monday to Saturday.

Circuito Mágico del Agua

≈1 Std.ParkDenkmal

Thirteen fountains set up in 2007 in the Parque de la Reserva, recognised by Guinness as the largest fountain complex in a public park, with a central jet climbing tens of metres. The park opens only from late afternoon and entry is ticketed; the light-and-music shows need full darkness.

Larco Museum

2–3 Std.MuseumHistorisches Museum

Set in an eighteenth-century viceregal mansion, the museum shows 45,000 pre-Columbian pieces and leaves its storerooms open to visitors, a rarity worldwide. The Moche erotic gallery sits in a separate pavilion at the back of the garden.

Puente de los Suspiros

≈1 Std.DenkmalBrücke

An 1876 wooden footbridge over the ravine running down to the sea in Barranco, immortalised in song by Chabuca Granda and now the district's emblem. The path beneath it, the Bajada de Baños, reaches the beach in about fifteen minutes.

Huaca Pucllana

1–2 Std.MuseumArchäologische Stätte

A Lima culture pyramid raised around AD 400 from millions of adobe bricks set on edge, a technique that let it ride out earthquakes. Visits are guided only, right in the middle of Miraflores, with floodlit evening slots.

Monastery of San Francisco

1–2 Std.SakralbauKlosterUNESCO

A Franciscan complex completed in 1774 whose catacombs served as the city cemetery until 1808 and hold the remains of some 25,000 people. The library and the crypts can only be seen on the guided tour, which is included in the ticket.
