Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Montpellier
Montpellier is a young southern city ten kilometres from the sea, home to the oldest medical school still teaching anywhere in the world. The Écusson Old Town is a tangle of quiet lanes that opens without warning onto the Charles-de-Gaulle Esplanade, a long promenade lined with plane trees and terraces from morning to night. Seventeenth-century mansions hide grand staircases and courtyards behind doors that give nothing away from the street. At the edge of the esplanade, the Musée Fabre keeps Courbets and Bazilles, the latter a painter born in the city. The beaches start just past the last houses: Petit Travers Beach, a long ribbon of sand between the lagoon and the sea, and La Grande-Motte Beach with its pyramid apartment blocks from the 1960s. Beyond that lie the vineyards, the ramparts of the Medieval City of Aigues-Mortes and the white horses of the Camargue Regional Nature Park.

Cité de Carcassonne
A walled medieval town with a double curtain wall and fifty-two towers, restored by Viollet-le-Duc and World Heritage-listed since 1997. The lanes are free to wander, the count's castle ticketed; direct trains run from Montpellier in about an hour and a half.
Arena of Nîmes
A first-century Roman amphitheatre, among the best preserved anywhere, still staging férias and concerts today. Ticketed entry with an audio guide; Nîmes is half an hour from Montpellier by train.
Pont du Gard
A first-century Roman aqueduct carrying its channel over the Gardon on three tiers of arches, 48 metres above the river, World Heritage listed since 1985. It is signposted from the A9 at Remoulins; the paid car park includes the museum and the riverbanks.
Cévennes National Park
France's only inhabited mid-mountain national park, taking in Mont Lozère, Mont Aigoual and the gorges of the Tarn and the Jonte, where griffon and cinereous vultures were reintroduced. The GR 70 Stevenson trail crosses it; the nearest entrances are about an hour and a half from Montpellier.
Camargue Regional Nature Park
The Rhône delta between Arles and the sea — lagoons, bull ranches, white horses and flamingos by the thousand. The Pont de Gau ornithological park near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer guarantees close-up viewing; about an hour's drive from Montpellier.
Cirque de Navacelles
A meander abandoned by the River Vis, sunk some 300 metres into the Larzac and Blandas causses, part of the UNESCO-listed Causses and Cévennes. The Baume-Auriol and Blandas viewpoints overlook the hamlet and its waterfall; the road to the valley floor is narrow and tightly switchbacked.
