Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Santa Cruz de Tenerife faces the Atlantic at the foot of a 3,715-metre volcano, the highest summit in Spain. Teide National Park fills the whole middle of the island: a desert of red and black lava under air so clear that observatories were built up there, and the Teide Cable Car climbs almost to the crater. The coast could not be more different. In the north, the ridges of Anaga Rural Park carry a laurel forest left over from another age, shaggy with moss and twisted trunks. In the south, El Médano Beach is the windsurfers' shore, under a small red mountain. The city has its own pale beach, Las Teresitas, whose sand was shipped in from the Sahara. Plates come with papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in coarse salt, and green or red mojo sauce. Its carnival is one of the largest anywhere in the world.

Loro Parque
Opened in 1972 at Puerto de la Cruz as a parrot park, it now holds one of the world's largest parrot collections alongside an aquarium, a chilled penguin house and orca pools. A free road train links the centre of Puerto de la Cruz to the gate, and online tickets cost less.
Teide National Park
The park surrounds Teide, at 3,715 metres the highest peak in Spain, inside a UNESCO-listed caldera 17 kilometres across. Reaching the summit crater requires a free permit booked well in advance; the rest of the park is open to everyone.
Anaga Rural Park
A massif of laurisilva, a relic Tertiary forest, listed as a biosphere reserve and criss-crossed with waymarked trails. The ridge roads are narrow and often in cloud, and buses link the hamlets from Santa Cruz.
Siam Park
A Thai-themed water park opened in 2008 at Costa Adeje, where the Tower of Power slide drops swimmers vertically before passing through a shark tank. It is 64 kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife by motorway, and opening hours shorten in winter, so check before driving out.
Dragon Tree of Icod de los Vinos
The Drago Milenario, a sixteen-metre dragon tree, is the oldest known specimen in the archipelago. It can be seen for free from the church square, while a park ticket lets you walk right around it.
Las Teresitas Beach
Santa Cruz's beach was built from scratch with pale sand shipped in from the Sahara and sheltered behind a breakwater. The water stays calm, and city buses stop at the end of the promenade.
