About

Discover the history of Kos

Kos is a Greek island in the Dodecanese, long and flat, lying a few miles off the Turkish coast. Sand runs almost without a break, from the pale shore of Paradise Beach to the coves of Agios Stefanos Beach, where two early Christian basilicas crumble in front of a rocky islet. Hippocrates was born here, and the sick were already being treated at the Asclepieion, a terraced sanctuary looking out to sea from the hillside. Every ruler left something in the same few streets: Roman mosaics at the Casa Romana of Kos, palm avenues and 1930s Italian civic buildings, the whitewashed lanes of Kos Old Town. It is one of the few Greek islands flat enough to cover by bicycle, on level paths lined with oleander. Up in the hills, the village of Zia fills every evening for the sunset. Peacocks roam free under the pines of Plaka Forest, and fish is served at tables set all but in the water.

Discover the best attractions in Kos and its surroundings

Kos Old Town

1–2 hCastleFortressOld town

The lanes of the old bazaar quarter, rebuilt after the 1933 earthquake — the same quake that uncovered the ancient agora, whose excavated ruins now open directly off the shopping streets. The Knights' castle of Neratzia guards the harbour entrance close by.

Zia

1–2 hViewpoint

A village on the wooded slopes of Mount Dikeos, about 15 km from Kos Town, whose west-facing terraces explain the evening crowds at sunset. The path to the island's highest summit, Christos peak, starts above the last houses.

Asclepieion of Kos

1–2 hViewpointArchaeological site

The sanctuary of Asclepius where the medical school of Kos taught in the wake of Hippocrates, built as three terraces linked by monumental stairways. The site is ticketed, about four kilometres south-west of Kos Town, and the top terrace faces the strait and the Turkish coast.

Plaka Forest

≈1 hForestWildlifePark

A pine grove near the airport where free-roaming peacocks live among the picnic tables, alongside tortoises used to visitors. Entry is free, down a short side road off the main Kefalos road, about 25 km from Kos Town.

Hippocrates Plane Tree

≈1 hParkMonument

The plane tree under which Hippocrates is said to have taught, on Platanou square by the bridge to the Knights' castle: the present tree, a few centuries old, has a hollow trunk held up by scaffolding. Seeing it is free, in the middle of Kos Town.

Agios Stefanos Beach

3 h+BeachSwimming

A sandy beach on Kefalos bay facing the islet of Kastri and its white chapel, with the columns and mosaics of two early Christian basilicas standing at the water's edge. The ruins are freely accessible; the bay lies about 40 km south-west of Kos Town.
