Rome

About

Discover the history of Rome

Rome is an open-air city. The Colosseum still stands at the end of the avenue, and the Roman Forum spreads its columns and paving stones below, where the empire was argued over. The Pantheon has barely changed in almost two thousand years, and daylight still drops through the hole in its dome. In the evening the crowd gathers at the Trevi Fountain, where the water cracks against white stone. Across the Tiber, St Peter's Basilica dwarfs everything around it, and the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel lead to Michelangelo's ceiling. The stone pines of the Villa Borghese cover the walks of the park, and the gallery hidden inside it lines up Bernini's marbles and six Caravaggios. The food is plain and very good: peppery pasta, fried artichokes, ice cream at any hour. The river is crossed again for dinner in Trastevere, under the washing lines and lamps of the cobbled lanes.

The largest amphitheatre ever built, inaugurated in 80 AD with room for 50,000 spectators. Book a timed slot online — the ticket also covers the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill within 24 hours.

Most popular

Trevi Fountain

≈1 hMonumentUNESCO

A rococo fountain finished in 1762 to Nicola Salvi's design, built against the Palazzo Poli and still fed by the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct. Coins tossed in the basin are collected for charity, and access to the rim now passes through a managed queue.

Most popular

Pantheon

≈1 hReligious buildingMonumentUNESCO

Rome's best-preserved ancient monument, crowned by an unreinforced concrete dome unmatched for 1,300 years. Morning light falls straight through the oculus, and entry, free for centuries, has been ticketed since 2023.

Most popular

St Peter's Basilica

2–3 hViewpointReligious buildingMonumentUNESCO

Built over the tomb attributed to the apostle Peter, the basilica covers more than 20,000 m² and rises 136 metres to the top of Michelangelo's dome. Entry is free, but the security queue crosses the open square: come early, with shoulders and knees covered.

Most popular

Roman Forum

2–3 hArchaeological siteMonumentUNESCO

The public square of ancient Rome lines up the Curia, the Arch of Septimius Severus and the columns of the Temple of Saturn within a few hundred metres. The ticket is shared with the Colosseum and the Palatine: enter from Via dei Fori Imperiali and leave on the Palatine side, where there is shade.

Most popular

Castel Sant'Angelo

1–2 hViewpointMuseumFortressUNESCO

Hadrian's mausoleum turned papal fortress, the castle is linked to the Vatican by a walled passage, the Passetto, used as an escape route in 1527. The top terrace faces St Peter's dome; access is over the car-free Sant'Angelo bridge.
