Ontdek de geschiedenis van Anchorage
Anchorage is a city with an outsized backyard. It sits on an arm of the sea with the Chugach range rising directly behind the last streets, and Chugach State Park, half a million acres of it, starts where the suburbs stop. Flattop Mountain is the most climbed summit in Alaska, close enough that people go after work. Moose wander through Kincaid Park and through front gardens, and salmon run up a creek in the middle of downtown. Along Turnagain Arm, belugas surface off Beluga Point as the tide pushes in. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center keeps rescued bears, bison and musk oxen on open ground, and Eagle River Nature Center sits at the mouth of a glacial valley. Further south, Kenai Fjords National Park is a coast of tidewater glaciers calving into the sea. Plates run to king salmon, halibut and reindeer sausage.

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
A refuge for orphaned and injured animals — brown and black bears, moose, musk oxen, and the wood bison reintroduced to Alaska from this site — on the Seward Highway an hour from Anchorage. The loop can be driven or walked, and the centre stays open year-round, winter included.
Kincaid Park
The park takes up Anchorage's western tip, with some sixty kilometres of cross-country ski trails lit through winter and singletrack in summer. Moose turn up regularly early and late in the day — keep your distance, especially in spring when cows have calves.
Chugach State Park
Almost half a million acres of mountains start at the city's eastern edge — one of the largest state parks in the United States, fifteen minutes by car from downtown. Each entrance — Glen Alps, Eagle River, Eklutna — has its own paid car park and its own trail network.
Kenai Fjords National Park
The park protects the Harding Icefield and the tidewater glaciers calving into the Pacific, reached from Seward, two and a half hours' drive from Anchorage. Only Exit Glacier is accessible by road — the rest is seen from a boat trip, which should be booked several days ahead in summer.
Beluga Point
A rocky pullout on Turnagain Arm where people watch for beluga whales riding the incoming tide, mostly in April and August, and Dall sheep on the cliffs above the road. Never walk out on the mudflats — the silt behaves like quicksand as the tide returns.
Eagle River Nature Center
A nature centre at the end of Eagle River Road, forty minutes from Anchorage, and the trailhead for the Rodak and Albert loops where salmon can be watched running in late summer. Parking is charged on site, and the Albert Loop closes regularly when bears are working the river.
