Ontdek de geschiedenis van Barcelona
Barcelona sits between a hill and the sea, and it takes twenty minutes to go from Gothic lanes to open sand. Antoni Gaudí left a whole city inside the city: the basilica begun in 1882 and still unfinished, the mosaic terraces of Park Güell on its hillside, the scaled front of Casa Batlló, the twisted chimneys of La Pedrera - Casa Milà. In the evening the crowd drifts down La Rambla towards the port, past flower stalls and full terraces. Barceloneta Beach puts swimming at the end of a metro ride, with rice dishes and grilled fish served along the front. Eating here is a simple pleasure: bread rubbed with tomato, cured ham, small plates shared until midnight. Under the iron roof of the Boqueria market, fish, cut fruit and whole hams are sold from first light. Football is close to a religion, and Camp Nou is its ground.

Sagrada Família
Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece, under construction since 1882, its Nativity and Passion facades dense with sculpture. Book a timed slot online several days ahead; the stained-glass light is at its best in late afternoon.
Casa Batlló
The most fantastical facade on Passeig de Gràcia — dragon scales, bone-like balconies and an undulating roof — remodelled by Gaudí between 1904 and 1906. Book online; the first morning slots are the calmest.
Camp Nou
Home of FC Barcelona and the largest stadium in Europe with close to 100,000 seats, it also houses the club museum and its trophy room. The redevelopment works keep moving the entrances and the tour route, so check the club's website before setting out; metro Les Corts or Palau Reial (line 3).
Mercat de la Boqueria
A market on La Rambla since 1840, roofed with an iron frame in 1914, where fish and ham stalls sit next to small tapas counters. It closes on Sundays and is best seen early in the morning, before the tour groups arrive.
La Pedrera - Casa Milà
Gaudí's last civil building, UNESCO-listed, with its rippling stone facade and a rooftop guarded by warrior-like chimneys. Head up to the roof late in the day, when the sun skims across the Eixample.
Arc de Triomf
A red-brick arch designed by Josep Vilaseca as the gateway to the 1888 World Fair, carrying friezes of Barcelona welcoming the nations. It opens a tree-lined promenade running down to the Parc de la Ciutadella, open to walk at any hour.
