Corfu

Over

Ontdek de geschiedenis van Corfu

Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands, its hills covered with olive trees the Venetians planted and nobody ever cut down. The old town looks like nowhere else in Greece: tall ochre houses, narrow lanes and Italian arcades, with the Old Fortress pushing out into the sea like a ship made of stone. Cricket is still played on the wide lawn of Spianada Square, left behind by the British. On the west coast, cliffs drop into bottle-green water around the bay below Paleokastritsa Monastery and the pale sand of Mirtiotissa Beach, and further north the sea has carved the sandstone channel of Canal d’Amour. Inland, the Achilleion Palace still holds the statues and gardens an Austrian empress had built here for herself. From the top of Mount Pantokrator the whole island appears at once, with Albania across the strait. On the table: fish baked in the oven, veal sofrito with garlic, and kumquat liqueur.

Paleokastritsa Monastery

1–2 uUitzichtpuntReligieus gebouwKlooster

An Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin, founded in 1225 at the tip of the Paleokastritsa headland, though the buildings standing today date from the eighteenth century: a small Byzantine icon museum, an old olive press and a courtyard under bougainvillea. Entry is free, and shoulders and knees have to be covered.

Old Fortress

1–2 uUitzichtpuntVestingMonument

A Venetian citadel on the twin-peaked promontory that gave Corfu its name, from the Greek koryphai, cut off from the town by a seawater moat, the Contrafossa. Inside, the Doric-columned church of St George dates from British rule; a paved ramp leads up to the lighthouse.

Spianada Square

≈1 uOude stadMonument

A broad esplanade cleared in front of the Old Fortress, edged on its western side by the arcades of the Liston, built under French occupation in the early nineteenth century. The cricket pitch left over from British rule is still played on, and the town's brass bands take the bandstand in summer.

Vlacherna Monastery

≈1 uUitzichtpuntReligieus gebouwKlooster

A small white monastery on an islet joined to the Kanoni peninsula by a narrow causeway, with the wooded islet of Pontikonisi just beyond. The causeway is free to walk and small boats cross to Pontikonisi; Corfu airport is close by, so planes pass low over the channel.

Angelokastro Byzantine Castle

2–3 uUitzichtpuntKasteelVesting

A Byzantine fortress on a 300-metre crag above the north-west coast near Paleokastritsa, said never to have fallen despite repeated Ottoman sieges. A stepped footpath climbs from the car park at Krini, and the site lies some thirty kilometres from Corfu Town.

Church of Saint Spyridon

≈1 uReligieus gebouwMonument

A sixteenth-century church holding the relics of Saint Spyridon, the island's patron, in a silver casket carried in procession four times a year. Its red-domed bell tower, the tallest in the Ionian islands, is the old town's landmark; entry is free, modest dress expected.
