Ontdek de geschiedenis van Funchal
Funchal clings to a bowl of green hills that drops straight into the Atlantic, with banana trees growing in the gardens of the town itself. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden stacks tree ferns, old azulejo panels and koi ponds above the bay. From Monte, the way down is a wicker basket on wooden runners, pushed along by two men in straw hats. The whole island is walking country: the irrigation channels of the PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes run along the cliff faces, and the Fanal Forest holds ancient laurels with twisted trunks. The Pico do Arieiro viewpoint stands over the ridges at eighteen hundred metres. On the north coast, the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools are black lava basins that the waves refill. Cabo Girão hangs almost six hundred metres above the ocean, with a glass-floored platform. Poncha is drunk with cane rum, Madeira wine comes by the glass, and espetada is grilled on a laurel branch.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden
The gardens of a former hilltop hotel, run by the Berardo foundation: oriental terraces, koi ponds, peacocks and a large collection of azulejo tile panels, plus a small mineral museum. The Funchal cable car stops at Monte, a short walk from the gate.
Ponta de São Lourenço
A bare volcanic peninsula at Madeira's eastern tip, where the PR8 trail runs about four kilometres among ochre and rust-coloured rock to a last viewpoint facing the islets. The path starts at the Baía d'Abra car park, with no shade and no water point along the way.
Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools
Pools formed where lava flows met the sea at Madeira's north-west tip, filled and refreshed by the tide, with ladders, changing rooms and lifeguards. Entry costs a few euros, while the rougher old pools beside the complex remain free.
Cabo Girão
A glass-floored platform juts out 580 metres above the sea at Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, looking straight down on the cultivated plots of the fajãs below. It stands above Câmara de Lobos; a small entrance fee applies, and buses climb from Funchal.
Fanal Forest
A high pasture scattered with centuries-old til trees, their trunks twisted low, a remnant of the laurisilva forest listed by UNESCO. The site sits on the Paul da Serra plateau; a road leads there, with a car park beside the trees, and access is free.
PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo
A paved path of 2.8 kilometres climbing from the Achada do Teixeira car park to Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 metres the highest point on Madeira, with a mountain hut shortly before the top. It is by far the shortest route to the island's highest summit.
