Ontdek de geschiedenis van Napels
Naples is loud, alive, and sits in front of a volcano. Mount Vesuvius closes off the bay, and the crater can be walked up for a view over the sea and the city below. Pizza was invented here, baked in ninety seconds in a wood oven and eaten standing, folded in four. The lanes of the old centre are narrow and noisy, strung with washing and lit by small street shrines. The eruption of AD 79 froze Pompeii under ash, and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii can be walked street by street, shops and frescoes included. On the water, the Castel dell'Ovo has guarded the harbour mouth for a thousand years. South of the city the coast turns spectacular: the cliff villages of the Amalfi Coast, the pink houses above Positano Beach, the coves of Capri.

Amalfi Coast
Fifty kilometres of World Heritage cliffs, strung together by a corniche road from Positano to Ravello. Traffic is punishing in summer — the ferry from Naples or the bus from Sorrento spares you the parking problem.
Archaeological Park of Pompeii
A Roman town buried by the eruption of AD 79 and uncovered across 44 hectares, with paved streets, bath houses and intact frescoes. The Circumvesuviana train from Naples reaches the Porta Marina entrance in about forty minutes; there is almost no shade inside.
Naples Cathedral
Naples cathedral holds the Treasury Chapel of San Gennaro, where the city patron's blood is said to liquefy three times a year. The early Christian basilica of Santa Restituta and its 4th-century baptistery need a separate ticket.
Naples National Archaeological Museum
It holds the mosaics and bronzes lifted from Pompeii and Herculaneum, along with the Farnese collection and its colossal Hercules. The Secret Cabinet of erotic objects is included in the ticket; closed on Tuesdays.
Castel dell'Ovo
The city's oldest fortress, planted on the islet of Megaride where Greek Naples began, at the end of a short causeway from the seafront. The Borgo Marinari marina at its foot is ringed by restaurants, and the ramparts look across the bay to Vesuvius.
Capodimonte Museum
A former Bourbon hunting palace turned gallery, with Caravaggio, Titian and Masaccio, set in 130 hectares of park. It sits away from the centre — a bus or taxi from the archaeological museum saves the climb.
