Ontdek de geschiedenis van Pisa
Pisa is famous for a mistake: a white marble tower that began to lean before it was even finished, and leans still. It stands on a wide green lawn beside Pisa Cathedral, whose striped marble shifts colour with the light. The rest of the city is far less known, and livelier. This is a student town, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, and the tables around Piazza dei Cavalieri fill up after dark. The Arno runs through it between ochre and pink facades, and the sunset is watched from the quays. The food is Tuscan and coastal at once: pasta with clams, chickpea soup, grilled beef from the hills inland. The sea begins ten kilometres away, behind the umbrella pines of San Rossore Park, and Florence is an hour by train.

Leaning Tower of Pisa
The cathedral's bell tower, fifty-seven metres tall and leaning close to four degrees since the stabilisation works finished in 2001. The climb runs on named timed slots, and bags have to be left at the lockers next door.
Cinque Terre
Five villages clinging to the Ligurian coast, UNESCO-listed and linked by footpaths and a local rail line. It is about an hour and a quarter from Pisa to Riomaggiore, and the Cinque Terre card covers both the train and the tolled trails.
Pisa Cathedral
The Romanesque cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo, with Giovanni Pisano's carved pulpit and a gilded coffered ceiling. Entry is free but needs a timed voucher from the ticket office, with shoulders and knees covered.
Piazza dei Cavalieri
The old seat of civic power, redesigned by Vasari and dominated by the sgraffito façade of the Palazzo della Carovana, today the Scuola Normale. It lies five minutes' walk from the Piazza del Duomo, on the way down to the river.
Pisa Baptistery
The largest baptistery in Italy, begun in 1152 and finished in Gothic style two centuries later, with a pulpit carved by Nicola Pisano in 1260. A custodian demonstrates the dome's famous echo at regular intervals, and the Piazza del Duomo combined ticket covers it.
Maremma Regional Park
A stretch of coast left wild, between dunes, pine woods and limestone hills where Maremmana cattle still graze, about two hours south of Pisa. Access is only through the Alberese visitor centre, where you pick your trail on arrival.
