Ajaccio faces west across a wide gulf, a Corsican town where the mountains drop straight into the sea and beaches sit at the end of a bus line. The old quarter is a tight grid of ochre houses under a Genoese citadel, with a morning market of cheese, cured meat and citrus near the port. Napoleon was born here in 1769 and baptised in Ajaccio Cathedral, and Maison Bonaparte, the family house, is kept furnished as the Bonapartes left it. The Fesch Museum holds the largest collection of Italian painting in France after the Louvre, the legacy of Napoleon's uncle, a cardinal. Boats leave the harbour for the Scandola Nature Reserve, red porphyry cliffs reachable only from the water, and for the Sanguinaires Islands at the mouth of the gulf. Corsican cooking leans on pork, brocciu cheese, chestnut flour and myrtle. Behind it all stands the granite interior of the island.

Calanques de Piana
Red granite cliffs carved by erosion, UNESCO-listed together with the Gulf of Porto. The D81 threads through them on a narrow corniche about two hours from Ajaccio — set off early, as passing places are scarce.
Scandola Nature Reserve
A land and sea reserve created in 1975 on old volcanic flows, reachable only from the water. Excursions leave from Ajaccio, Porto or Sagone, and landing is prohibited.
Sanguinaires Islands
Four red porphyry islets closing off the Gulf of Ajaccio; the largest, Mezzu Mare, carries a lighthouse and an old Genoese tower. Boats leave from the Tino Rossi marina, usually in the late afternoon for the sunset.
Maison Bonaparte
Napoleon's birthplace, held by his family since the late 17th century and refurnished as it stood in 1798. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month.
Ajaccio Cathedral
The 16th-century cathedral where Napoleon was baptised in 1771; the font stands to the right as you enter. It is in the heart of the old town, about a hundred metres from Maison Bonaparte.
Fesch Museum
The Italian primitives assembled by Cardinal Fesch, Napoleon's uncle — France's largest such collection after the Louvre's. It closes on Tuesdays, and the neighbouring Imperial Chapel is covered by the same ticket.
