Amsterdam is a city built to a plan: a half-ring of canals begun in 1613, dug when the town was the richest port in Europe and now on the UNESCO list. Houses were taxed on their width, so they grew tall and thin, leaning forward with hoisting beams still bolted to the gables. Ninety islands and some fifteen hundred bridges later, the bicycle remains the honest way to cross it. The merchants' fortunes left the collections behind: the Rijksmuseum and Rembrandt's Night Watch, the Van Gogh Museum with two hundred canvases, the Anne Frank House in the rooms themselves. Brown cafés, panelled and smoke-darkened, pour beer beside deep-fried bitterballen, and three centuries of trade with the East left rijsttafel on the menu. Vondelpark and the far larger Amsterdamse Bos take the city outdoors, and the Zaanse Schans Windmills still turn a short way north.

Rijksmuseum
The Dutch national museum holds Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Milkmaid in an 1885 building with a cycle path running straight through it. Book a timed slot online; the Philips Wing, away from the Gallery of Honour, draws the smallest crowds.
Keukenhof
Seven million bulbs bloom each spring across 32 hectares at Lisse, in the heart of the tulip fields. The park opens only from mid-March to mid-May, and a direct shuttle runs from Schiphol airport.
Van Gogh Museum
The world's largest collection of the painter — over 200 canvases and 500 drawings hung in the chronological order of his life. Tickets are sold online only, with a fixed entry time.
Vondelpark
Amsterdam's most visited park, 47 hectares laid out in the English landscape style around ponds and lawns, with an open-air theatre that stages free performances. Cycle paths cut straight through it and stay busy.
Anne Frank House
The secret annexe at 263 Prinsengracht, where the Frank family hid for two years, was left unfurnished at Otto Frank's request. Tickets are released six weeks ahead and are never sold at the door.
Royal Palace of Amsterdam
Built in the 17th century as the city hall on 13,659 wooden piles, it now serves as the king's reception palace. Check the calendar before coming: it closes at short notice for state occasions.
