Oppdag historien til Antalya
Antalya faces a very blue sea, with limestone mountains closing the horizon behind it. The old town, Kaleiçi, still sits inside its walls: cobbled lanes, Ottoman houses with wooden balconies, a small harbour at the foot of the cliff. The Düden Waterfalls drop straight into the sea at the edge of town. Beaches run for tens of kilometres, from the pale pebbles of Konyaaltı Beach to the turquoise inlet of Kaputaş Beach, wedged between two walls of rock. Ancient cities are scattered through the hinterland, and the Aspendos Ancient Theatre, almost intact, still hosts concerts under the open sky. A cable car climbs past two thousand metres, and the whole bay fits into a single view. The food is grilled fish, slow-cooked kebabs and pastries heavy with syrup, and tea comes in small tulip glasses.

Temple of Apollo
Five Corinthian columns re-erected in the late twentieth century from a second-century Roman temple, standing at the tip of the Side peninsula about 65 km east of the city. The site is open and unfenced, and it draws its biggest crowd late in the day, when the sun drops behind the shafts.
Saklıkent Gorge
A gorge of eighteen kilometres cut into the Taurus, its walls closing to a few metres apart: a wooden walkway follows the cliff at the start, beyond which the way is waded up a freezing stream. It lies near Fethiye and shuts in spring, when snowmelt raises the water.
Aspendos Ancient Theatre
A Roman theatre raised around AD 155 by the architect Zeno, whose stage wall and tiers of seats survive almost intact, which is rare anywhere in the ancient world. It is still a working venue, with the international opera and ballet festival playing here each summer, about 45 km east of the city.
Alanya Castle
A Seljuk enceinte rebuilt from 1226 under Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I: about six kilometres of wall and close to a hundred and forty towers wrap a rocky headland above the sea. A cable car climbs from the Alanya seafront, and the town sits some 135 km east of Antalya.
Düden Waterfalls
Two falls share the name: the upper one, ten kilometres north of the centre, where a path passes behind the curtain of water into a cave, and the lower one, which drops off a cliff straight into the sea. Tour boats nose in beneath the lower fall.
Ancient City of Phaselis
A Lycian port founded in the seventh century BC, its three harbours, aqueduct and sarcophagus-lined avenue still readable among the pines. The ruins run down to shingle coves where swimming is allowed; one ticket covers site and beaches, about 60 km south-west of Antalya.
