Bologna answers to three nicknames: the red one, for its brick; the learned one, for the oldest university in the world; and the fat one, for its table. Forty kilometres of arcades, on the UNESCO list since 2021, cover the centre, and the city can be crossed end to end without ever leaving them. Piazza Maggiore is its drawing room, held on one side by the unfinished front of the Basilica of San Petronio, left bare above the halfway line for five hundred years. Just off it, the Two Towers have leaned over the rooftops since the Middle Ages, one far taller than the other. A covered walkway of six hundred and sixty-six arches climbs the hill to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca, with the whole plain laid out below. Tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in broth and mortadella were all invented here, and they are still made by hand. At night the students take over the streets and the wine bars open with the dark.

Piazza Maggiore
Bologna's central square since the thirteenth century, framed by San Petronio, the Palazzo d'Accursio and the Palazzo del Podestà, whose vaulted corners carry a whisper from one pillar to the other. In summer a giant screen turns it into an open-air cinema for the Cinema Ritrovato festival.
The Two Towers of Bologna
The twelfth-century Asinelli and Garisenda towers, both leaning, are what survives of Bologna's medieval forest of towers; Dante mentioned the Garisenda's tilt. The climb up the Asinelli's 498 steps is suspended while the Garisenda undergoes consolidation works.
Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca
An eighteenth-century sanctuary on the Colle della Guardia, keeping the Byzantine icon of the Virgin carried down into the city in procession each spring. A UNESCO-listed portico of 666 arches climbs 3.8 km from Porta Saragozza; the San Luca Express road train spares the walk.
Giardini Margherita
Bologna's main public park, opened in 1879 just outside the walls at Porta Santo Stefano and laid out in the English style around a lake. The old greenhouses, Le Serre, now run as a café and open-air cultural space on the park's edge.
Bolognese Apennines
The hills and ridges south of Bologna, crossed by the Via degli Dei, the long-distance path that links Piazza Maggiore to Florence over the crest of the range. Local trains and buses from Bologna serve trailhead villages such as Sasso Marconi.
Basilica of San Domenico
The basilica holds the Arca di San Domenico, a marble tomb begun by Nicola Pisano's workshop in 1265, three of its small figures carved by a nineteen-year-old Michelangelo. Entry is free, the church closes at midday, and a coin-operated light illuminates the tomb.
