Oppdag historien til Cancún

Cancún begins with the colour of the water: a clear, improbable turquoise running for kilometres along the coast. The sand is white powder ground from coral, along the long sweep of Playa Delfines and on Playa Norte across the bay. Under the jungle, fresh water opens into bright shafts: Cenote Dos Ojos for swimming, the underground galleries of Río Secreto for wading through a river in the dark. The Maya left their cities two hours down the road, the great pyramid of Chichén Itzá and Tulum, whose temple sits on a cliff above the sea. In the evening Parque de las Palapas fills with families, marimba players and taco stands. The local table means cochinita pibil, fish grilled tikin xic style, and coconut water sold at the roadside. Offshore begins the second largest barrier reef on earth, a coral system that runs from here down to Honduras.

Hel dagArkeologisk stedMonumentUNESCO

A great Maya city whose Kukulcán pyramid casts a serpent-shaped shadow down its stairway at the equinoxes, beside the largest known Maya ball court. The site lies about 200 kilometres from Cancún along the toll road, and climbing the monuments is forbidden.

Tulum

3 t+KlippekystArkeologisk stedMonument

One of the few Maya cities built facing the sea, ringed by walls on a twelve-metre cliff above the Caribbean, about 130 kilometres from Cancún. Tour coaches pour in from mid-morning, so the first opening hours are the quiet ones.

Playa Delfines

1–2 tStrandHvit sandBading

The one large hotel-zone beach with no resorts in front of it, at km 18 of Boulevard Kukulcán, with a viewing deck and the giant CANCÚN letters. It faces open sea and surf and currents run strong, so the flag is the rule; the El Rey ruins sit just across the boulevard.

Playa Norte

3 t+StrandParadisstrandHvit sandBading

At the northern tip of Isla Mujeres rather than Cancún proper, a beach where the water stays waist-deep far out from shore, with barely any waves. Ferries cross from Puerto Juárez in about twenty minutes, and the sand is a short walk from the dock.

Cobá Archaeological Zone

3 t+SyklingTempelArkeologisk sted

A Maya city set around two lagoons, its Nohoch Mul pyramid rising 42 metres, the tallest in the northern Yucatán, 120 kilometres from Cancún. Bicycles and pedicabs hired at the gate cover the long causeways between ruin groups; climbing the pyramid is no longer allowed.

Valladolid Historic Centre

3 t+GamlebyGastronomi

The colonial core of Valladolid, laid out around the main square and the church of San Servacio, with painted façades and the Zací cenote inside town. It sits about 150 kilometres from Cancún along the toll road and is often paired with Chichén Itzá.
