Oppdag historien til Madrid
Madrid sits on a plateau more than six hundred metres up, which makes it the highest capital in the European Union. The city stays up late, terraces are still full after midnight, and hot chocolate with churros is an early-morning habit. The Prado Museum holds one of the greatest painting collections in the world, with Goya, El Greco and Hieronymus Bosch in the same rooms, while the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum tells the rest of European art two streets away. The Royal Palace of Madrid has more than three thousand rooms, which makes it the largest royal palace in western Europe. El Retiro Park lays out a boating lake and a glass palace among the trees. Around the Plaza Mayor, bars serve thin-sliced ham and fried squid in a bread roll. And football belongs to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, sold out week after week.

El Retiro Park
The royal park's 125 hectares, UNESCO-listed together with the Paseo del Prado — the Crystal Palace, the rose garden and rowing boats on the great pond. Free to enter; the free exhibitions in the Crystal Palace are worth seeking out.
Aqueduct of Segovia
Built by the Romans without mortar of any kind, the aqueduct runs on 167 granite arches and stands 28 metres above the Plaza del Azoguejo. It is free to walk up to, and Segovia is half an hour from Madrid by high-speed train.
Prado Museum
Velázquez, Goya, El Greco and Bosch — Spain's great picture gallery, built around Las Meninas. Book online; entry is free for the last two hours of each day, at the cost of a sizeable queue.
Royal Palace of Madrid
Western Europe's largest royal palace — over 3,000 rooms, Sabatini's grand staircase and the Royal Armoury. Book a time slot online; the changing of the guard takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Plaza Mayor
The arcaded main square of 1619, with Philip III's equestrian statue and the frescoed Casa de la Panadería. Have a coffee on the square, but eat in the surrounding streets — better and cheaper.
Santiago Bernabéu Stadium
Home to Real Madrid since 1947, the stadium was wrapped in a steel skin and closed by a retractable roof in works finished in 2024. The museum and dressing-room tour is booked online, and the route is cut short on match days.
