Upptäck historien om Doha
Doha rose out of the sand in a single generation, and the two versions of Qatar still sit side by side. On one hand, glass towers that light up over the bay at night, with seven kilometres of palm-lined waterfront at their feet. On the other, Souq Waqif, its plastered lanes, its dealers in spices and falcons, its cafés where the shisha runs late. The Museum of Islamic Art fills a block of pale stone on an island of its own, and its collection spans fourteen hundred years. The National Museum of Qatar looks like interlocking concrete discs, drawn from the shape of a desert rose. Katara Cultural Village lines up theatres, mosques and galleries along the shore, with a beach at the end of it. The food is Lebanese, Iranian and Indian as much as Qatari, and the grilled fish is very good. Before the gas, the country lived on pearl diving, and wooden dhows still lie at anchor along the corniche.

Katara Cultural Village
A seaside district of galleries, theatres and craft workshops between West Bay and The Pearl, set around a Greek-style open-air amphitheatre, an ornately tiled mosque and mud-brick pigeon towers. Wandering the village is free, and so are most exhibitions.
Souq Waqif
A century-old trading ground rebuilt in the 2000s in traditional mud-render and timber, its lanes given over to spices, fabrics and shisha cafés; the adjoining falcon souq sells hooded birds and houses a falcon hospital. Many stalls close in the early afternoon and reopen toward evening.
Aspire Park
Doha's largest park, laid out around an artificial lake at the foot of the Aspire Tower raised for the 2006 Asian Games. It is free to enter, the paths stay lit after dark, and Sport City metro station serves the Aspire zone.
National Museum of Qatar
Jean Nouvel gave the museum the form of a desert rose — hundreds of interlocking discs wrapped around the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. It opened in 2019 at the southern end of the Corniche and has its own metro station on the Gold Line.
Museum of Islamic Art
The museum of I. M. Pei, coaxed out of retirement for this late commission, stands on an artificial island of its own off the Corniche; inside are 1,400 years of ceramics, manuscripts, carpets and metalwork from three continents. The MIA Park behind frames the Doha skyline.
Doha Corniche
A seven-kilometre promenade curving around Doha Bay, from the Museum of Islamic Art to the towers of West Bay, with wooden dhows moored along the quay. Walking it is free at any hour; there is no beach — the bay is for looking at, not for swimming.
