Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, and the quietest town on that coast. The old centre keeps inside its walls, behind the Arco da Vila and its stork nests, a grid of white lanes, tiled facades and terraces serving clams cooked in a copper cataplana. Behind the Igreja do Carmo, a chapel lined entirely with bones gives the place its darker side. In front of town, the Ria Formosa Natural Park spreads out a lagoon of mudflats and sand islands where flamingos stop over: Tavira Island Beach is reached by ferry, Barril Beach by a miniature train crossing the marsh to a graveyard of old tuna anchors. Westward the coast changes entirely and turns to ochre cliff, drilled with arches and caves, at Marinha Beach and at Benagil Cave, open to the sky through a round hole in its roof. At the far end, the cliffs of Cape St Vincent drop into the Atlantic, where the known world once stopped.

Ponta da Piedade
A headland of ochre limestone pierced by arches and studded with stacks, south of Lagos, where a staircase cut into the cliff drops to a landing stage at the waterline. It lies 65 kilometres from Faro, an hour by road, and the caves only open up from a small boat or a kayak hired at Lagos marina.
Benagil Cave
A sea cave on the Lagoa coast whose roof is pierced by a round opening that lights the small beach inside. Entry is only from the water — kayak, paddleboard or boat from Benagil or Praia da Marinha — and landing is banned; the clifftop path leads only to a viewpoint over the hole.
Três Irmãos Beach
The rocky eastern end of Alvor's long beach, named after the three sandstone stacks rising from the sand. Low tide opens natural tunnels through the rocks to the neighbouring coves — they close again as the water rises, so the tide table matters here.
Praia da Rocha
Portimão's great resort beach — an unusually wide apron of sand beneath ochre cliffs, with the seventeenth-century Santa Catarina fort guarding its eastern end. Wooden boardwalks cross the sand, and bars and restaurants line the esplanade above.
Marinha Beach
A cove framed by limestone cliffs near Carvoeiro, known for the double sea arch standing just off its eastern end. Access is down a long flight of steps from the clifftop car park, on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail; the sand all but disappears at high tide.
Barril Beach
A beach on Tavira Island reached from Pedras d'el Rei, over a footbridge and then on foot or by miniature train along the old tuna-fishermen's track. Rows of rusted anchors in the dunes recall the closed tuna fishery, and the former village now houses bars and restaurants.
