Upptäck historien om Las Palmas

Las Palmas faces the sea, half working port and half beach town. Las Canteras Beach runs three kilometres through the middle of town, sheltered by a natural rock bar offshore, and locals go down for a swim after work. Behind it the old quarter keeps its wooden balconies, Las Palmas Cathedral and the Casa de Colón, where Columbus is said to have stayed on his way across the Atlantic. Gran Canaria packs a continent into fifty kilometres: in the south, the Maspalomas Dunes roll a genuine sand desert down to the sea. Inland the island climbs to nearly two thousand metres, and Roque Nublo stands up over the ridges as an eighty-metre finger of stone. The pine forests of Tamadaba Natural Park smell of resin and hang over the coast. Papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in heavy salt, come with a sharp green sauce.

Hel dagStrandStadsstrandBadSnorklingSurfing

Three kilometres of sand in the middle of the city, shielded by La Barra, a rock bar that turns the bay into a natural pool at low tide. The southern end, La Cícer, is left to surfers as soon as the swell gets in.

Amadores Beach

Hel dagStrandVit sandVikBadSnorkling

A man-made cove filled with imported pale sand and sheltered by two breakwaters, so the water stays calm and clear year-round. Paid parking sits above the cliff, and a shuttle boat comes in from Puerto Rico.

Parque de Santa Catalina

The port district's main square, between the Elder science museum and its café terraces, doubles as the main stage of the Las Palmas carnival in February. Airport buses terminate here and Las Canteras beach is a five-minute walk away.

Pico de las Nieves

2–3 timVandringUtsiktsplats

Gran Canaria's high point at 1,949 metres, looking down into the Tejeda caldera with Roque Nublo in the foreground and Tenerife's Teide on the horizon. A paved road runs all the way up, with a car park just below the viewpoint.
