Upptäck historien om Marseille
Marseille is two thousand six hundred years old, the oldest city in France, founded by Greek sailors who wanted a sheltered harbour. Everything still begins at the Old Port of Marseille, where fishermen sell the morning catch and the terraces stay full until night. Boats leave the quay for the Château d'If, the island prison of the Count of Monte Cristo. Just behind, the lanes of Le Panier climb in steps between ochre walls and washing strung across the windows. Then the city stops dead at white cliffs: Calanques National Park begins inside the city limits, with turquoise inlets reached on foot. Notre-Dame de la Garde watches over all of it from its hill. Bouillabaisse has to be ordered a day ahead: the rock fish arrive whole, the broth on the side.

Notre-Dame de la Garde
A Romano-Byzantine basilica finished in 1864 on a 149-metre limestone hill, topped by a gilded Virgin over eleven metres tall and hung inside with sailors' ex-votos. Entry is free; bus 60 climbs from the Old Port, otherwise the slope is a steep walk.
Carrières des Lumières
Former limestone quarries in the Val d'Enfer, where Cocteau filmed in 1959 and which have carried projected exhibitions across walls over ten metres high since 2012. The air inside stays cool year-round, so bring a jacket even in August, and book a timed slot online.
Orange Vélodrome
Opened in 1937 and given a wave-shaped roof for Euro 2016, Olympique de Marseille's ground holds 67,000, more than any French stadium except the Stade de France. Guided tours reach the changing rooms on non-match days, by booking, and the metro stops at Rond-Point du Prado.
Arena of Nîmes
A Roman amphitheatre built at the end of the first century, 133 metres long and ringed by two tiers of arches, the best preserved in the Roman world. It still hosts concerts and ferias, which close it on some days; Nîmes is an hour from Marseille by train.
Pont du Gard
A first-century Roman aqueduct carrying its channel over the Gardon on three tiers of arches, 48 metres above the river, World Heritage listed since 1985. It is signposted from the A9 at Remoulins; the paid car park includes the museum and the riverbanks.
Calanques National Park
Created in 2012, Europe's first peri-urban national park protects some twenty kilometres of limestone inlets between the city and Cassis, on land and at sea. Access to the massifs is regulated from June to September by fire risk, with the next day's map posted each evening.
