Rhodes belonged to Helios: the Greeks made the island the home of their god and raised a bronze colossus some thirty metres tall, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Its old town, the Medieval City of Rhodes, still lives inside four kilometres of walls, among cobbled lanes, minarets and sleeping cats. The Knights of St John left the Street of the Knights, a stone street preserved from end to end, and the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. At the mouth of Mandraki Harbour, two bronze deer mark the spot where tradition places the vanished giant. Above the modern town, the columns of the Acropolis of Rhodes stand on a hill facing west. The coast does the rest: the golden sand of Tsambika Beach under its cliff, the calm water of Lindos Beach below a white village, the pines and rocks of Anthony Quinn Bay. Grilled fish and tomatoes are eaten at the foot of the walls, with island wine.

Medieval City of Rhodes
The largest still-inhabited medieval town in Europe, ringed by four kilometres of walls and UNESCO-listed since 1988. Entry is free through eleven gates; the Amboise Gate to the north avoids the souvenir streets.
Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes
A Hospitaller fortress rebuilt by the Italian administration in the 1930s, with twenty-four rooms open and Roman mosaics shipped over from Kos. The combined ticket with the Archaeological Museum costs less than two separate entries.
Mandraki Harbour
The town's old harbour, guarded by two bronze deer where tradition places the Colossus, and lined with three stone windmills. Boats to Symi and Lindos leave from the eastern quay first thing in the morning.
Tsambika Beach
A long fine-sand bay on the east coast, backed by the rock that carries Tsambika monastery. The three hundred steps to the chapel start from the main road, a kilometre before the beach turn-off.
Archaeological Museum of Rhodes
Housed in the fifteenth-century Hospital of the Knights, it holds the Aphrodite of Rhodes and the funerary steles from Kamiros. The arcaded courtyard and the sculpture garden come with the same ticket.
Lindos Beach
The main bay below the acropolis of Lindos, shallow and sheltered from the wind, which makes it easy with children. You walk down through the whitewashed village lanes — parking is up top only.
