Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Bordeaux

Bordeaux was built on wine, and the money shows in the stone: kilometres of pale eighteenth-century façades lined up along the Garonne. In front of them the Miroir d'eau spreads two centimetres of water over granite and turns the quay upside down, and children run across it with their shoes in their hands. The spires of Bordeaux Cathedral and the free-standing bell tower of Saint Michael's Basilica, the tallest in southern France, rise above the slate roofs. Cité du Vin tells two thousand years of vineyard history and ends with a glass poured high above the river. The Médoc châteaux and the slopes around the Monolithic Church of Saint-Émilion are an hour away, with market stalls shucking Arcachon oysters in between. And to the west stands the highest dune in Europe: the Dune of Pilat falls a hundred metres into pine forest on one side and into the Atlantic on the other.

Since 2020 the submarine base built by the occupying navy between 1941 and 1943 has carried digital exhibitions projected onto concrete walls over ten metres high and onto the water of its four pens. The hall stays cool all year and slots are booked online; tram line B serves the Bacalan district.

1–2 Std.SakralbauKathedrale

A largely Gothic cathedral of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, World Heritage listed as a stage on the roads to Santiago, its Porte Royale keeping a carved thirteenth-century doorway. Entry is free; the free-standing Pey-Berland tower is a separate ticketed climb.

≈1 Std.Denkmal

A 3,450-square-metre sheet of water on granite slabs facing the Place de la Bourse, the largest reflecting pool in the world, alternating a mirror effect with banks of mist. Free and open to all; the water cycles pause in the coldest months.

Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux

1–2 Std.DenkmalTheater

3+ Std.HöhleArchäologische Stätte

Limestone cliffs line the Dordogne through the Périgord, hollowed with shelters lived in since prehistory and topped by villages and castles — Beynac, La Roque-Gageac, Domme. Sarlat, the usual base, is about two hours by road from Bordeaux; gabare boats run along the foot of the cliffs.

Cité du Vin

2–3 Std.MuseumWeingut

A museum of the world's wine cultures, opened in 2016 in a swirling aluminium-and-glass tower on the Garonne. The ticket ends with a tasting at the eighth-floor belvedere overlooking the river; tram line B stops at the foot of the building.
