Dalaman

Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Dalaman

Dalaman is not really a town: it is the way into Turkey's turquoise coast, an airport set between pine mountains and a sea of improbable blue. The lagoon at Ölüdeniz Nature Park is the picture everyone knows, with paragliders drifting down from the ridge above it. İztuzu Beach runs for almost five kilometres of pale sand and closes at night so loggerhead turtles can come ashore to nest. Offshore, boats move from one cove to the next through the Göcek Islands, with a swim between anchorages. Inland, a mountain torrent threads Saklıkent Gorge between walls hundreds of metres high, shallow enough to wade up on foot. The coast is an open-air museum as well: Lycian tombs cut high into the cliff at the Amyntas Rock Tombs, the ruins of the Ancient City of Kaunos above the reed beds. The villages behind live off pine honey, dark and resinous, sold by the jar at the markets.

Saklıkent Gorge

Ganzer TagNationalparkFlussSchluchtWandern

A gorge of eighteen kilometres cut into the Taurus, its walls closing to a few metres apart: a wooden walkway follows the cliff at the start, beyond which the way is waded up a freezing stream. It lies near Fethiye and shuts in spring, when snowmelt raises the water.

Azmak River

1–2 Std.BootstourFlussKajak

Flat-bottomed boats work their way up the Azmak, a spring-fed river so clear you can watch the turtles below. Departures are from the jetty by the bridge, either shared or private.

Marmaris Castle and Archaeology Museum

1–2 Std.AussichtspunktHistorisches MuseumBurg

The citadel rebuilt by Suleiman in 1522 overlooks the old harbour and now houses the town's archaeological museum. It is reached through the bazaar lanes, and the rampart terrace takes in the whole bay.

Gizlikent Waterfall

1–2 Std.WasserfallSchluchtWandern

A waterfall hidden at the end of a narrow rock corridor, a few kilometres from Saklıkent. The last stretch is walked in the stream, sometimes waist-deep, so bring clothes you don't mind soaking.

Ancient City of Knidos

Ganzer TagSteilküsteAussichtspunktArchäologische Stätte

At the tip of the Datça peninsula, the Dorian city of Knidos guarded two harbours and once held Praxiteles' Aphrodite. The road out is long and winding, and many prefer to arrive by boat from Datça.

İztuzu Beach

Ganzer TagStrandNaturstrandBadenBootstourTierwelt

A four-kilometre sand bar between the sea and the Dalyan delta, and a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. The beach closes at night during the nesting season and is most easily reached by boat from Dalyan.
