Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Izmir
Izmir spreads along the end of a wide gulf, facing the sunset, and the sea is in view from almost everywhere. This is ancient Smyrna: the Agora of Smyrna still holds its columns and vaulted galleries right in the middle of the modern city. Beside it, Kemeraltı Bazaar runs for miles of covered lanes, past fig sellers, goldsmiths and cafés with low wooden stools. Asansör, a lift built against the cliff face in 1907, rises in seconds to a terrace overlooking the whole bay. An hour away by road, the Ancient City of Ephesus unrolls its marble street towards an ancient library whose two-storey front is still standing. The Aegean coast does the rest: the stone houses and bougainvillea of Alaçatı Bazaar, the pale sand and shallow water of Ilıca Beach. Meals are grilled fish, wild greens in olive oil, and boyoz, a flaky pastry found nowhere else. At night the terraces of the Kordon line up along the water.

Ancient City of Ephesus
One of the best-preserved Roman cities of the Mediterranean, from the two-storey facade of the Library of Celsus to a theatre that held some 25,000 spectators; the frescoed Terrace Houses require a separate ticket. The site is near Selçuk, about 80 km south of Izmir.
Asansör
A public elevator built in 1907 to link the seaside street of Karataş, the old Jewish quarter, with the neighbourhood on the cliff above. The ride is free and the terrace at the top overlooks the whole Gulf of Izmir; a restaurant occupies the upper floor.
Old Foça Coast
Seafront of Eski Foça, an old fishing town whose harbour restaurants serve the morning's catch; boats leave the quay for the Siren Rocks, which legend ties to Homer, and for the protected coves. The town is about 70 km northwest of Izmir.
Çeşme Castle
Ottoman fortress finished in 1508 under Bayezid II to guard the harbour of Çeşme; its ramparts overlook the marina and face the Greek island of Chios across the strait. The interior houses a small museum, paid entry; Çeşme is about 85 km west of Izmir.
Alaçatı Bazaar
Cobbled lanes of old Greek stone houses with coloured shutters, now filled with boutiques and well-known restaurants; restored windmills stand on the hill above. The village lies about 80 km west of Izmir, next to Çeşme.
Kemeraltı Bazaar
A labyrinth of market streets running since the 17th century from Konak Square towards the ancient agora, taking in the Kızlarağası Han caravanserai and the Hisar Mosque. Browsing is free; most shops close on Sundays.
