Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Málaga
Málaga is Picasso's home town, and it has grown into a city of museums, from the Museo Picasso Málaga to the coloured glass cube of the Centre Pompidou Málaga on the harbour. Still, the street is the first draw: Calle Larios cuts through the centre in polished marble, and its terraces never empty. La Malagueta Beach runs straight from the edge of the centre, with shacks where sardines cook on skewers stuck in the sand. Above the rooftops, the Moorish palace-fortress of the Alcazaba climbs to Gibralfaro Castle and its view over the bay. A Roman theatre lies at the foot of those walls, uncovered by chance in 1951. The cathedral never received its second tower, which earned it the nickname of the one-armed lady. Inland, the Caminito del Rey hangs a walkway on the wall of a narrow gorge, a hundred metres above the river.

Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
Begun in 785, the mosque runs on hundreds of marble and jasper columns under two-tone horseshoe arches, with a cathedral raised in its midst in the 16th century. Entry is free early on weekday and Saturday mornings, and Córdoba is under an hour from Málaga by high-speed train.
Caminito del Rey
A walkway pinned a hundred metres above the Chorro gorge, reopened in 2015 after years of closure. The route runs one way from the northern access: book online and plan on the shuttle bus back to the southern car park.
Puente Nuevo
Ronda's bridge crosses the Tajo gorge some 98 metres above the river; the interpretation centre occupies the chamber built inside its central pier. Ronda is about 1 hr 45 by road from Málaga, or by train from María Zambrano station.
Balcón de Europa
A palm-lined promenade laid out at Nerja on the remains of a coastal battery, at the end of a headland dropping to two coves. It is free to walk, steps lead down to Calahonda beach, and Nerja is an hour from Málaga by bus.
Mercado Central de Atarazanas
An iron-framed market built in 1879 around the marble gateway of a Nasrid shipyard, under a stained-glass window showing the old city. It trades in the morning, closes on Sundays, and the counters at the back serve the day's fried fish.
Caves of Nerja
An underground gallery discovered in 1959, whose 32-metre central column ranks among the tallest in the world. It lies an hour east of Málaga on the A-7, with timed tickets best booked online.
