Paphos

Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Paphos

Paphos looks out from the western tip of Cyprus, at the spot where legend has Aphrodite rising from the foam: the rock of Petra tou Romiou marks it, on a pebble beach with the waves breaking over it. The town was a Roman capital, and the Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos still holds whole floors of mosaic, their gods and hunting scenes as sharp as the day they were laid. Close by, the Tombs of the Kings are cut straight into the rock above the sea, courtyards, columns and all. North of town the coast turns wild: the Akamas Peninsula has barely a surfaced road left on it, Avakas Gorge closes to thirty-metre walls, and turtles come ashore to nest on the sand of Lara Beach. Wine has been made on these hills for four thousand years, and the inland villages still press it. On the table: grilled halloumi, octopus, and meze without end.

Petra tou Romiou

1–2 Std.StrandBadenSchnorchelnAussichtspunkt

The sea stack tied to the legend of Aphrodite's birth rises beside the Paphos-Limassol coast road. The beach is coarse pebble with strong currents, and swimming is unwise in any swell; an underpass leads down from the car park, and a viewpoint sits above the road.

Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos

2–3 Std.Archäologische StätteUNESCO

Capital of Cyprus in Hellenistic and Roman times, the UNESCO-listed park keeps the mosaic floors of the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, with a rock-cut odeon and the remains of the agora. It adjoins Kato Paphos harbour, and shade on the site is almost nonexistent.

Avakas Gorge

3+ Std.SchluchtWandernAussichtspunkt

A gorge cut by the Avgas stream into the limestone at the edge of the Akamas, narrowing until the walls nearly touch overhead. The path follows the streambed from a dirt track above Toxeftra beach, and rockfall warnings are posted at the narrows.

Tombs of the Kings

1–2 Std.Archäologische StätteUNESCO

A Ptolemaic necropolis begun in the fourth century BC, its underground tombs cut into the rock around colonnaded courtyards; despite the name, it buried Paphos's officials and nobles, not kings. Entry is ticketed, about two kilometres north of the harbour on the coast road.

Akamas Peninsula

Ganzer TagNaturstrandSchnorchelnTierweltWandern

A peninsula without paved roads at Cyprus's north-western tip, where marked trails — the Aphrodite loop among them — start near the Baths of Aphrodite beyond Latchi. Inside there are only dirt tracks: the reserve is explored on foot, by 4x4 or by boat from Latchi harbour.

Troodos Mountains

Ganzer TagWaldWandernAussichtspunkt

The mountain massif at the centre of the island, topped by the 1,952-metre Mount Olympus, its slopes dotted with villages and with ten Byzantine painted churches on the UNESCO list. From Paphos, mountain roads reach the Troodos villages in around two hours.
