Entdecken Sie die Geschichte von Tanger

Tangier faces Europe: the strait narrows to fourteen kilometres, and the Spanish coast draws itself in across the water. The city spent decades as an international zone, a bolthole for writers, painters and spies, and what remains of that is old cafés, white facades and a reputation for not giving itself away at once. The medina falls in steps down to the port, and the Kasbah Museum occupies the former sultan's palace, cedar ceilings and a marble courtyard. To the northwest, Cape Spartel marks the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and the Caves of Hercules open to the sea through a gap shaped like the map of Africa. Deeper in the lanes, the Tangier American Legation Museum fills the first building the United States ever owned abroad, a gift from the sultan in 1821. The food is coastal: grilled sardines, the day's catch, tagines, and tea poured very sweet.

Perdicaris Park

1–2 Std.WaldAussichtspunktPark

A cork-oak and eucalyptus forest on the heights west of the city, once the estate of Ion Perdicaris, whose 1904 kidnapping made international headlines; his villa still stands in the grounds. Free to enter, with paths dropping toward the shore of the strait.

Cape Spartel

1–2 Std.SteilküsteAussichtspunktLeuchtturm

Commissioned in 1864 by Sultan Mohammed IV and long run by an international consortium, the lighthouse stands about 95 metres above the water on the headland marking Africa's north-western corner. It is fourteen kilometres from central Tangier, just above the Caves of Hercules.

Archaeological Site of Volubilis

Ganzer TagArchäologische StätteDenkmalUNESCO

A Roman city of Mauretania Tingitana whose floor mosaics remain in place, alongside the capitol, the basilica and the arch of Caracalla; the site has been World Heritage-listed since 1997. It lies near Moulay Idriss, roughly 250 kilometres from Tangier, with no shade at all in the middle of the day.

Grand Socco

≈1 Std.AltstadtMarkt

The hinge between the medina and the new town, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, named for a landmark speech by Sultan Mohammed V; the horseshoe arch of Bab Fahs opens off it into the old city. Liveliest toward evening, when the square becomes Tangier's meeting point.

Chefchaouen Medina

3+ Std.AltstadtSoukShopping

A Rif mountain medina where the lanes and house fronts are washed in blue, gathered around Outa el-Hammam square and its fifteenth-century kasbah. Chefchaouen is about 110 kilometres from Tangier, two hours on mountain roads, and the craft workshops open mainly in the morning.

Tanja Marina Bay

1–2 Std.StrandStadtstrandBaden

A marina opened in 2018 inside the old port of Tangier, at the mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar, with around 1,400 berths, a cruise terminal and a café-lined promenade below the medina. There is no swimming here — it is a working harbour — but it is where the fast ferries to Tarifa in Spain depart.
