Ontdek de geschiedenis van Dubai

Dubai rose out of a sandy coast in fifty years and it kept a taste for excess. The Burj Khalifa reaches eight hundred and twenty-eight metres, taller than any other building on earth, and at its foot The Dubai Fountain throws water a hundred and fifty metres into the air several times an evening. Offshore, an island shaped like a palm tree, Palm Jumeirah, lines up hotels and beaches. White sand runs along the city itself at Kite Beach and Jumeirah Beach, right below the towers. The old town has not vanished: the coral-and-gypsum houses of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood under their wind towers, the wooden boats that ferry people over Dubai Creek for a few cents, the gold and spice of the souks. A driverless metro glides above the avenues, and the desert starts twenty minutes out, with red dunes and the birdlife of Al Qudra Lakes. For sheer improbability, Dubai Miracle Garden grows millions of flowers in the middle of the sand.

1–2 uStrandStadsstrandZwemmenUitzichtpunt

A palm-shaped artificial island completed in 2006 from seven million tonnes of rock, which added tens of kilometres of coastline to the emirate. A monorail runs its length to the hotel at the tip, and the public beaches sit on the eastern side of the trunk.

A park of national pavilions where close to ninety countries sell crafts and street food, with a funfair attached. It only opens from October to April and shuts completely for the summer.

Dubai Miracle Garden

1–2 uParkBotanische tuin

A hundred and fifty million flowers arranged into arches, hearts and the shell of an Airbus A380, drip-fed with recycled water. The garden closes from late May to October, when the heat makes the planting impossible.

Dubai Frame

1–2 uUitzichtpuntMonumentToren

A gilded frame a hundred and fifty metres tall, aligned so that the old city appears on one side and the towers on the other. The floor of the upper walkway turns transparent as visitors step onto it.
